Active Release Technique, or A.R.T. is used for treating myofascial release, muscle pain relief, and treating muscle pain.

How do muscular overuse conditions occur?
When overextended – used beyond their limits – your muscles and other soft tissues are subject to 3 critical stressors:
- Acute Injuries • these include damage caused by significant pulls, tears, impacts, or other trauma.
- Micro-Trauma • overexertion causes microscopic muscular tears. This is a normal part of growth, but left untreated, excessive accumulation of these micro-tears can lead to severe scarring, discomfort and further complications.
- Hypoxia • by definition, your cardiovascular system simply cannot keep up with the oxygen demands of an overworked muscle. Of course, lacking sufficient oxygen, cells quickly begin to die. In severe cases, the potential for extensive tissue damage exists, especially for those with pre-existing cardiovascular conditions.
Through your body’s natural healing process, dense scar tissue is formed in these damaged areas. This new tissue is much harder and less flexible than muscle, and can restrict free-moving tissues nearby.
The more scar tissue accumulates the shorter and weaker your muscles become. This can result in increased stress on your tendons, leading to tendonitis and trapped nerves. Left untreated, these conditions can deteriorate until you experience reduced range of motion, loss of strength, and pain. Note that pain is not always present – sometimes, trapped nerves manifest as a tingling sensation, localized numbness or weakness.
What can you expect with Active Release Technique treatment?
Active Release Technique treatments involve skilled manual evaluation of the texture, flexibility and general mobility of your soft tissues. Your practitioner removes or breaks down fibrous adhesions, by hand, using stretching motions which usually align with the direction of venous and lymphatic flow (towards the heart), although in some cases, effective treatment requires the opposite approach.
As with other chiropractic treatments, you’ll move through 3 phases of Active Release Technique, with recovery of the damaged tissues directed and implemented by your practitioner.Active Release Technique includes a fourth level of treatment, in which you’ll begin actively moving the affected tissue yourself (in carefully-prescribed ways) while your practitioner applies targeted pressure or resistance to the affected area.
